Research Interests
The volcanology group at UNR is actively working on magmatic processes in the crust, primarily by integrating field work and analytical geochemistry of magmatic products. This work is applied to modern volcanic systems as well as older exposed subvolcanic and plutonic environments. The group has been working in the Andes for basically 20 years and has active research also in the Cascades, the Aleutians and the Great Basin.
We have a tight volcano community with weekly to bi-weekly meetings discussing our own work as well as exciting new published studies. Graduate students and faculty interact with an open-door approach so that issues and research questions can quickly be addressed.
The group particularly could help to bring in students interested in the geochemical records in minerals to develop timescales as well as fingerprinting signatures of different reservoirs. Potential contributions to active research projects in Chile (e.g. Cordon Caulle, Quizapu) is possible.
Proposed Hosting Period
Ideally hosting starts as early as late February and can occur over most of the year after that. Some travel to the field and conference may make some windows less suitable.
Exchange Language
Group language is English, but some group members also speak Spanish, German, and Italian
Facilities/Resources
We have excellent analytical facilities:
Field emission electron microprobe and field emission secondary electron microscope
Raman spectroscopy
Mineral separation facilities
Variety of picking microscopes and petrographic microscopes
Potential access to National Lab facilities (XANES and microCT)
Workstation can be provided
Motor park for field work and field trips if desired within the region
Collaborations with faculty in house (e.g. surface processes) as well as with active collaborators elsewhere (Univ of Oregon, Univ of Wyoming, UC Davis, Rice, Cornell)
