Project Description
The Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) houses scientists and field engineers with a wide range of expertise in researching and monitoring volcanoes and attendant hazards. In addition to a focus on volcanoes in the Cascades, CVO is also home to the Volcanoes Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP) - a group that focuses on providing assistance to volcano observatories all around the world - including Chile. Participating students or early career scientists would be able to join CVO and VDAP personnel for a range of activities, including field work at Cascades volcanoes, instrument development in the machine and electronics labs, data analysis and modeling of seismic, geodesy, gas geochemistry, and remote sensing data, or petrologic research within our petrography and analytical labs. If interested in hazards communications, the exchange student could also work with CVO's outreach team to gain experience with interacting with a wide range of stakeholders in volcanically active areas. The experience would be tailored to fit the interests of the visiting guest.

Facilities/Resources
CVO hosts a wide range of geophysical instruments (e.g., GPS, seismic) and gas monitoring instruments (e.g., Multi-GAS, DOAS spectrometers) for campaign measurements and field installations. CVO has an analytical petrography and petrology lab with access to microscopes, mineral separation tools, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with quantitative capabilities, and a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. On-site machine shop and electronics labs enable the construction or modification of instruments, enclosures, and field tools.
