Research Interests

The volcanology group at LDEO is an engaging team where experts in multiple subdisciplines are represented and work in collaboration. Specifically, we are inviting exchange scholars to join the Anticipating Volcanic Eruptions in Real-Time (AVERT) project. At AVERT, we collaborate with observatories in Alaska and Costa Rica (and hopefully soon Chile) to collect data from a wide range of sensors with the goal of identifying precursors to eruptions and the eruption themselves once they occur. Other areas of expertise that scholars are invited to collaborate on are numerical and analog laboratory modeling of eruption processes (particularly of lava flows), remote sensing and image analysis in volcanology, volcano seismology, data science for volcanology, petrology (including thermobarometry, volatile budgets, melt inclusion analysis, and crystal clocks).

Facilities & Resources

* Petrology/geochemistry: Full analytical facilities to measure volcanic rocks, crystals and melt inclusions: FTIR, laser ablation ICPMS, SEM, electron probe, experimental petrology lab. * Computation: Access to a local computaitonal server, to Columbia's high-performance computer facility, and to the group's AWS allocation; Access to a full-time research software engineer through Project VICTOR.
* Analog experiments: a full Fluid Mechanics laboratory to perform analog experiments on lava and magma dynamics, including material stocks (wax, syrup, silicone oil, granular media), pumps, cameras, pressure and temperature sensors, data loggers. Access to an in-house machine shop and shop engineer, for fabrication of experimental setups.
