SZNet 2027 Chile Pilot Project
Tectonic transitions and surface geohazards in the Southern Central Andes:
A comparative arc perspective
Chile
OBJECTIVES
To help advance our understanding of subduction geohazards through an interdisciplinary lens
Description
DATES: Austral Summer 2027. The exact dates to be announced.
WHAT: A week-long, interdisciplinary field trip investigating the geodynamic processes and surface hazards associated with the latitudinal transition from the flat‐ slab subduction segment (27°–33° S) to the normal subduction regime south of 33° S in the Southern Central Andes. This pilot project will bing together both US and non-US scientists at a variety of career stage interested in cross-disciplinary approaches to researching subduction system. Participants will be selected through an application process taking in late 2026. Please keep an eye out here for updates.
This tectonically complex region offers a unique opportunity to (1) link deep Earth dynamics with surface processes, (2) quantify spatial variations in hazard potential, and (3) generate comparative datasets for inter‐ arc analysis with Cascadia—directly aligning with SZ4D’s mission to promote integrated,
investigating volcanic eruptions, crustal faults, and sediment dynamics near Mount Hood, Oregon.
GOALS: The SZNet pilot projects aim to developing a cross- trained, international community of scientists and advance our understanding of subduction geohazards through week-long long pilot studies in Cascadia and Chile. These pilots include a field and classroom components, aimed at collecting, compiling and/or processing data through an interdisciplinary lens to answer pressing subduction zone geohazard research questions. These projects will aim to inform future activities such as the planned MultiHazard Array
FUNDING: Funding for participant travel, food, lodging, and field supplies wi available through SZNet which is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation AccelNet program under award 2301732.
