Connecting Early Career Researchers in Subduction Zone Science

Greetings Subduction Enthusiasts!!

It’s been an exciting few months for SZ4Grads. In March and June, we hosted our Career Panel Webinar Series, featuring geoscientists working in industry and in non–tenure-track academic roles (shoutout to our panelists!!). Panelists shared their experiences with navigating job searches, new environments, and adapting honed skillsets to new roles, giving early career researchers a chance to explore the many career paths available beyond the tenure track. Insights from the panelists on applying to these roles will make an appearance on our Instagram soon.

This month panel focused on focus on research careers outside of industry, with panelists working in non-tenure-track positions within academia, as scientists for the public service, and more: Anahi Carrera (National Nuclear Security Administration Graduate Fellow, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory); Anaïs Férot (SZ4D Managing Director, UCSC); Amy Ryan (Research Scientist and Lab Manager in the Experimental Rock Deformation Laboratory at Rice University); Vanessa Swinton (Lead Field Geologist, Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI)

SZ4Grads is especially excited to announce the Early Career Researcher Report on the 2026 SZ4D Science Community Meeting is now available for viewing!! During the community meeting, SZ4Grads led five groups of early career researchers in developing reflections on community meeting structure, science, and the future of SZ4D. Thank you to everyone who participated - the perspectives from across the Early Career Research community brought this report to life!

This fall, we’ll be hosting another series of panels on the SZ4D US-Chile Exchange Program. Exchange program participants from previous years will share their experiences and answer questions about finding research mentors, applying, and doing projects in a new setting! We’re also excited to welcome new members to the SZ4Grads Executive Committee and look forward to the fresh ideas and enthusiasm they’ll bring in the coming year :)

Hope to see you all at our events in the coming year…

Yours Subductingly,

SZ4Grads Excomm (Hannah Shabtian, Kate Scholz, Tiegan Hobbs, Emma Burkett)
