Mini-Workshop at the AGU Fall Meeting

Open DAS Data for Subduction Zone Environments

December 14, 2025

8:30AM-12:30PM Local Time

Tulane River and Coastal Center

free and open to all, no AGU registration required

registrations to this event are now closed.

Objectives

This workshop aims to introduce participants to publicly available DAS datasets and open-source tools, demonstrate analysis techniques relevant to subduction zone science, foster collaboration and data sharing to enhance reproducibility within the SZ4D community, and build connections among early-career and established researchers.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is rapidly transforming the way we observe Earth processes, offering dense spatial and temporal resolution over long distances. In subduction zones—regions that span from offshore environments to high elevations—DAS offers new opportunities to study tectonic, volcanic, and environmental signals, while better understanding, assessing, and monitoring the geohazards that threaten

communities in these settings. This workshop will introduce participants to openly available DAS datasets from key subduction zone settings. Through a combination of hands-on tutorials and short presentations, we aim to broaden access to DAS technology, share emerging analysis techniques, and foster a community of practice around these rich, rapidly expanding data resources. Public datasets to be featured include dark fiber deployments at Mount Rainier (WA), Cook Inlet (AK), and the Ocean Observatories Initiative Regional Cabled

Array (OR).

Organizers

Verónica Gaete-Elgueta (University of Washington), Manuela Köpfli (University of Washington), Qibin Shi (Rice University), Zoe Krauss (University of Washington), Yiyu Ni (University of Washington), Ethan Williams (UC Santa Cruz), and Brad Lipovsky (University of Washington)
