Dear SZ4D Community Collaborators,

On behalf of the efforts of numerous folks in the SZ4D community, we are excited to present a working draft of the proposed volcano targets for the SZ4D MultiHazard Array. 

As you may know, SZ4D is in the process of budgeting a major equipment proposal (MSRI-2) for potential submission to NSF in mid-2025.

There are two major volcano instrumentation styles:

• Volcano Sensor Arrays (VSAs) provide long-term observations on ~30 volcanoes for the ten-year duration of the program.

• Volcano Imaging Arrays (VIAs) are dense, temporary (2-year) deep imaging deployments. 

Please refer to section 3.3 of the Implementation Plan if you want to re-familiarize yourself with the general concepts.

Our next step is to finalize the VSA and VIA lists, so that we can refine a realistic budget and logistics plan. At this point we are reaching out to all stakeholders involved with this decision to share a proposed combined volcano list (see attachments and list below) and seek your combined feedback.

This draft list was developed through regular meetings with the SZ4D Magmatic Drivers of Eruption (MDE) Working Group and official monitoring agencies in Alaska, Cascadia, and Chile. The list reflects fruitful discussions, logistical considerations, and a careful balance between the science goals outlined in the Implementation Plan and the capacity, priorities and direction of each observatory. This list has been reviewed by the current working groups and is now ready to receive input from the broader science community. 

Specifically, we request feedback on this list by December 20th, that addresses the following questions:

1. Are there any volcanoes that have been left off this list but should be on?

2. Are there low-priority volcanoes on this list that could be replaced by another, or removed?

3. Are there logistically impossible targets that should be removed?

4. Do you have volcano-specific comments that would help us budget accurately (e.g., access, permitting…)

Feedback should be entered in this Google form, which will be reviewed by co-chairs of MDE and project lead for the MSRI proposal. 

At this time, we most likely cannot increase the number of total targets, so any suggestions for addition need to be accompanied by a proposed removal.
