Updates from the Chair of the SZ4D Executive Committee
Happy AGU! I am looking forward to seeing you all in Washington, DC next week. The firehose of science is always invigorating and feels like a fitting reward for the chaotic and stressful week beforehand. Let’s celebrate making it through the pre-AGU madness at the SZ4D icebreaker on Sunday night hosted at the UCDC building in downtown DC from 5-8 PM. Feel free to bring a poster to share (register your poster here) or just show up to chat science. Please also join us for the townhall on Wednesday night at 6 PM in the Marriott Marquis 1-2 where we will have more focussed discussion on specific SZ4D activities and plans. If you would like a quiet space for a small group meeting during the week, please make use of the SZ4D headquarters, which is a short walk from the convention center. Meet with your collaborators, committee members or co-proposers in our space by using this sign up.Â
In the same spirit as the AGU meeting, SZ4D is leaning into new ways to enable scientists to share our discoveries. We are launching a Science Hub that compiles current work in subduction zone geohazards in the form of lightning talk-style slides. Please share yours here. We’ll be highlighting these slides at the AGU townhall on Wednesday as well as on the SZ4D website next year. We have also started a database of scientists seeking other scientists. This is a resource to help you find a collaborator to help fill in key knowledge gaps. To gain access to the database, all you have to do is share your own information through the matchmaking survey. Over 120 scientists have already joined and are ready to work with you!
After we all catch our breaths after AGU, please take a moment to weigh in on our plans for the MultihazardArray. The instrumental proposal is planned as a submission to NSF in spring 2025 and we need your input. A draft list of target volcanoes is available for feedback through Dec. 20. Your thoughts are very welcome and will result in a better plan.
See you soon!
Emily
