Scientist Vignettes

Meet the Scientists shaping subduction zone science
As part of our growing scientist matchmaking community, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on the researchers behind the platform. Each spotlight will feature a participant from the SZ4D Scientist Matchmaking Survey, offering a glimpse into their work, interests, and goals. Through the vignettes, our participants will share who they are, what drives their science, and how they hope to connect - an engaging way to discover potential collaborators and get to know the scientists shaping subduction zone science.

You, the Scientist
What question(s) drive(s) your research right now?
What controls megathrust earthquake slip obliquity and what does it imply for recurrence estimates?
How do mid-ocean ridges, oceanic transform faults, and fracture zones evolve—and what sets their global systematics?
How do Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) influence continental breakup and Earth’s long-term climate?
How can we bridge deformation across scales, from lab fabrics to lithospheric dynamics?
What tools, data, or approaches are you currently using? Are there others you are most eager to explore?
I combine computational geodynamics (ASPECT, LaMEM, SNAC, FLAC) with global and multidisciplinary constraints (e.g., bathymetry/topography datasets, GCMT focal mechanisms, and rock-fabric observations from lab and nature). I’m especially eager to explore earthquake rupture dynamics models and machine learning for accelerating models.
Community & Collaboration
What type of collaborations are you hoping to build?
Interdisciplinary collaborations. I see geodynamics as a bridge across processes, datasets, and scales—so I’m excited to work with seismologists, geochemists/petrologists, marine geophysicists, and modelers to close loops between data and physics.
What is one piece of advice you would give to your fellow Early-Career Researchers as they build their careers?
Be curious while staying focused.
Career & Opportunities
Are you currently looking for a new position? (eg. postdoc, fellowship, or other). If so, in what area?
Yes—postdoctoral and faculty positions in geodynamics / solid Earth geophysics.
Outside of Science
What do you enjoy outside of science? (one small detail, keeps it vignette-style)
Tennis, swimming, and playing with my young kids.
A fun or unexpected fact about yourself: Vipassana meditation has been a major influence on how I approach life and work (“the Art of Living” @ https://www.dhamma.org/en/about/art).
